Push-ups (or Press-ups) are great for developing your upper body. And you can do them anywhere, at any time. However, some find them a bit tricky to do. Therefore I thought we'd go through the technique together!

Push-up

Lie face down on the floor, with your hands palms down at chest level, slightly more than shoulder width apart. Fingers pointing forward. Keep your body completely straight, it should be pushed up as a package. Push your body up off the floor until your arms are straight, turn the movement and come back down at the same pace. Turn the movement once your body touches the floor or just before that. Remember to keep your body straight at all times, both on the way up and on the way down. The only thing moving should be your arms.

Alternative:
For an easier exercise, lower your knees so that they rest on the floor. Remember to keep your body just as straight.

Push-up on knees

To isolate your chest more during a press-up, widen the position of your hands a bit.
If you want to work out your triceps (backside of your arm) more, do the opposite and bring your hands closer together,
parallel to your chest and spaced about shoulder-width apart, with your elbows tight to your body. (See pics below).

Good Luck!

Ive been looking for a more effective way to firm up my triceps than lifting dumbells. Last week I began doing pushups with my arms closer to my body -- and whadyaknow, its working! I can tell cause thats where I feel the day-after ache. Never heard of this method before. so thanks. Any secret way to flatten my tummy?? Happy Sally

Hi Sally,
Glad to hear youve been having some day after ache, youre very welcome!
Well, the secret way to a flat stomach is really to lose the fat covering the stomach muscles (together with doing exercises of course). We all have the muscles, we just have more or less fat covering them.
Ill put some more flat belly exercises up here, for sure!
